Toyota Hilux
Possibly one of the most legendary Toyota 4x4s, the Hilux is lightweight enough but with a strong drivetrain, making it ideal for the most challenging of off-road terrains. Such robust capabilities have made it popular with drivers as well as with militaries around the world, including the British Army.

Toyota Tacoma
The Tacoma from Toyota is a reliable 4x4 with solid construction that, along with towing capabilities, has made it so popular for off-roaders in the North American market. While not officially released here in the UK, plenty of people have imported this model owing to its ample ground clearance and reputation in off-roading.
Toyota 4Runner
The Toyota 4Runner is another model not specifically released in the UK but it features high on a lot of people’s lists. That’s largely down to the body-on-frame construction which gives it strength when off-roading. Ground clearance and cargo-carrying capability also mean the 4Runner is a hard-working truck.

Toyota 60 Series Land Cruiser
As you’ll see with these next three entries, the Land Cruiser is one of the best-known Toyota 4x4s. While the 60 Series may not stand up as well against its modern counterparts when it comes to ride quality, it was known for its spacious design and tough build to match challenging terrain.
Toyota 70 Series Land Cruiser
The 70 Series of the Toyota Land Cruiser offered drivers more choice regarding what they wanted from a 4x4. It has a reputation for more utility-driven design, including reinforcement for heavy-duty use, which probably explains why some of the vehicles in this series always top the lists for best Toyota off-roaders.
Toyota 80 Series Land Cruiser
Despite the numbers, the 80 Series of the Land Cruiser picked up where the 60 Series left off. Adding luxury to the line as well as the off-roading ingredients that made the predecessors so great, you get both space for people and equipment, as well as the power and diff-locks to get you through almost any off-road conditions.

Toyota Mega Cruiser
Originally designed as an infantry vehicle for the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force, it’s easy to see why the Toyota Mega Cruiser is as large as it is. The idea was to move both soldiers and munitions, but it soon developed other uses in emergency rescue. A powerful engine, portal axles and four-wheel drive made it a monster of off-roading. Sadly, it never officially made it to the UK and was discontinued in 2001.
Toyota FJ Cruiser
With a slightly more retro look to it, the Toyota FJ Cruiser is another 4x4 that never actually made it to the UK market. However, there are now a few around in the UK thanks to imports from markets overseas. A short wheelbase and A-TRAC make it a handy off-road vehicle, but the unique look combined with modern conveniences in the interior is surely what lends it more appeal.
